HISTORICAL CONTEXT — Augustus and the Roman political setting belong to the world surrounding Judea.
SCRIPTURE — Luke 1–3 and Matthew 1–3 place Herod, Caesar Augustus, Bethlehem, the house of David, John, and Jesus inside the biblical account.
ROME IS ABOVE JUDEA
HISTORICAL CONTEXT — The earlier research path followed Rome from distant reputation to direct involvement in Jerusalem. Herod now rules beneath Roman supremacy.
THE DAVIDIC WORD RETURNS TO THE FRONT
SCRIPTURE — In Luke 1, Gabriel’s announcement to Mary reaches directly into the language of David: Jesus is connected with David’s throne and a kingdom without end.
FOLLOW THE CONNECTION — Judah’s visible Davidic throne had disappeared from Jerusalem generations earlier. The promise connected with David had not disappeared with it.
CAESAR'S DECREE — BETHLEHEM
SCRIPTURE — Luke 2 places Caesar Augustus in the account and brings Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem, the city of David. Matthew 2 also places the birth within the days of Herod and brings forward Bethlehem in the prophetic record.
FOLLOW THE CONNECTION — Caesar is visible in the political world, Herod is visible in Judea, but the biblical narrative keeps moving toward the earlier word.
THE TITLE: KING OF THE JEWS
SCRIPTURE — Matthew records men from the east arriving in Jerusalem asking for the one born King of the Jews. Herod hears the language of kingship while he himself rules beneath Rome.
The research does not need to erase Rome or Herod to make the connection. Their visible authority forms the setting in which the biblical claim about another king enters the story.
