A word with a generational limit
Jehu destroyed the house of Ahab and removed Baal from Israel, yet the record also says he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam. The LORD nevertheless told Jehu that his sons would sit on Israel’s throne to the fourth generation.
Follow the dynasty
SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 10 records the word to Jehu. The later reigns carry the house forward through Jehoahaz, Joash, Jeroboam II, and finally Zechariah.
The fourth generation arrives
After the long reign of Jeroboam II, Zechariah became king. His reign lasted only six months before Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against him and killed him.
JEHU → JEHOAHAZ → JOASH → JEROBOAM II → ZECHARIAH → DYNASTY ENDS
The word reaches its limit
The end of Zechariah’s reign is therefore more than another change of king. It returns the reader to the earlier word given to Jehu concerning four generations on Israel’s throne.
From prosperity to instability
Israel had looked strong under Jeroboam II. After him, the throne becomes increasingly unstable, leading toward the final generations before Samaria falls.
